Nourish the Children Initiative

Q1. How severe is the malnutrition problem in the world?
A1. According to UNICEF, more than 15,000 children under the age of five perish daily from malnutrition, starvation or related causes. If only a small percentage of the population was willing to contribute two meals per day, millions of lives could be saved.
(According to the World Health Organization, protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) affects every fourth child worldwide: 150 million (26.7%) are underweight while 182 million (32.5%) are stunted. Geographically, more than 70 percent of PEM children live in Asia, 26 percent in Africa and 4 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean.)

Q2. Has there been any progress worldwide in dealing with this problem?
A2. There has been progress in reducing the number of malnourished children, but it has been slow. The target set at the 1996 Children Food Summit was to reduce by half the number of undernourished people by 2015 from the number set in 1990-92.
